How do i sew leather

Sewing leather is a lot like using a sewing machine. You're really using two separate threads, which is a lot easier than the usual sewing style of having to pass the needle all the way through. You punch down, making a loop on the far side, and then pass the other thread through the loop, then pull back up.The two threads are intertwined and keep each other from moving.

The thread never leaves the hole in the awl.And the thread never has to be pulled through the holes, like they do in a regular stitch; You pull each stitch tight and the thread never moves after that.

On a sewing machine that's called a"Lockstitch".With a leather awl it's called a"Double needle stitch"Or"Saddle stitch".The"Double needle" makes it really clear that you've got an awl for making loops and a needle for passing throughTherunning thread, like this:

Here are some more detailed instructions. Here's another set of instructions, with illustrations but less True Religion Mens Jeans well written, about halfway down the page(Look for"The sewing awl).

And Religionjeansuk the thickness of the leather.

I have an industrial sewing machine that will sew thin to medium thick leather, as long as i take it slowly and use a leather needle.Once the seam is sewn, you have to take a roller to the seams to flatten them out, and then glue the seams to the sides, to keep them there. You need heavy-Duty thread, too--Not button and carpet thread, though that will work in a pinch, but the tough waxed thread used for sewing heavy canvas is good to have.

If you're working on thick leather, or sewing by hand, the easiest thing to do is to get a piercing wheel. (Try dressmaker supply websites--Of greenberg and hamner.Big craft stores may have them, but i haven't looked), and I warn you that this wheel is probably sold under several different names.

This tool looks like a tiny spiked pizza cutter--One with long sharp points on the spikes--You put the two pieces of leather together in place, and run the piercing wheel over your seam line, then sew through the holes you've made.I hold the pieces together using clothes pins or binder clips to keep the holes lined up.Some quick tacking in key places helps.Again, heavy-Duty thread, and a big, short, solid needle will help, as will a heavy-Duty thimble.I hate using a thimble with hand-Sewing, but it's practically essential for this, as you will need the extra strength it supplies to go through the holes you've created.

For very thick leather, you may have to hole-Punch and lace.Keep the holes as small as possible, and keep them away from the very edge, for stability and strentgh.

For very light garment weight leathers such as those found in women's clothing and in dress gloves an industrial sewing machine works just fine.Be True Religion Outlet sure to keep your stitches fairly long or your needle will essentially cut the leather.

An older juki or other metal geared machine would do for these light to medium Cheap True Religion Jeans leather duties.

Do not use machines with plastic gears for sewing leather.

For medium weight leathers found in motorcycle jackets, shoes, and work gloves you may need an actual leather sewing machine. You can get them new but they're very pricey;I'd consider getting one used off of craigslist or ebay like this.

For saddle weight leathers found in gun belts, shoe soles, reenactment armor, etc you have two options-

Either you shell out some really big cash and get something like this-

Here is an example of a machine you might find in a saddle makers or gun belt maker's shop.

Or you get out an awl, a leather needle, some artificial sinew, a pair of pliers, some beeswax, and some hand protection and sew it by hand. This takes time and there is a learning curve.

Check out this site for advice on handsewing leather. It's one of the best out there with great pictures.

The lightest garment leather can be sewn on a standard sewing machine, with a specially shaped needle. (Readily available at sewing supply shops)

Heavier shoe leather can be sewn with a heavy hand needle, or with a"Sewing awl" (Readily available at craft stores)If you're planning on doing production work, look for a specialty sewing machine. If you go into a shore repair shop, you will usually see one or two of the type i am talking about.
